Maternal Mental Health

How To Take Care Of Yourself

A number of symptoms, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and psychosis, can be associated with maternal mental health issues. These can happen both during pregnancy and after delivery. These symptoms can have serious effects on the woman and her family if they go untreated.

The Lifeline is available for calls or chats if you're facing difficulties. We ensure confidentiality and are accessible 24/7. Our crisis counselors are ready to provide a listening ear without judgment and extend supportive assistance.

  • Make a safety plan↗: If/when you experience depression, suicidal thoughts, or a crisis, have a step-by-step plan prepared so you can begin at step one and work your way through the steps until you feel secure. Listing your coping mechanisms, figuring out the people in your life who might help you get through a crisis, and other things might be included in a safety plan.

How to Help

  • Ask and listen: Participate actively in your loved ones’ support networks and communicate with them frequently. For a variety of reasons, many women, especially those who suffer from melancholy or intrusive thoughts, are afraid to speak up. Be straightforward if they show any suicide warning signs. Inform them that discussing suicidal thoughts is OK. Use active listening skills and give them a chance to speak without interruption. Mothers frequently endure intense stigma and guilt, especially if their pregnancy and delivery went smoothly and they delivered a healthy child. Recognizing cultural distinctions can be useful in eliminating the stigma and guilt associated with mental illness.
  • Learn the facts: A number of biological, psychological, and social stresses, including a lack of support, a family history, or prior exposure to similar symptoms, might contribute to maternal mental health difficulties. The most frequent consequences of childbirth, maternal anxiety and depression, which affect up to 1 in 5 women, are neither universally checked for nor treated.
  • Get them help and take care of yourself: Don’t be scared to get your loved one the assistance they may require while also taking care of yourself. Women who receive treatment can recover from sadness and anxiety. The risk can be decreased and, in some cases, prevented. In order to assist in times of need and to offer support to family, friends, and loved ones, the Lifeline is available 24/7 for chat or voice calls.
